Teaching the weaving process has not always been easy for me to teach. Students struggle with the concept of over and under and being able to see the pattern. That all changed for me when I decided to create these large paper looms. Students were given more practice and able to work with their peers for extra guided practice. To make this even better, I turn it into sort of a competition, the group that finishes first and does it correctly may move on to the individual paper looms. They love the intrinsic reward of finishing and moving to the next task.  I hope that this helps you if you struggle like I did with paper weaving.  Each student gets one strip to weave correctly. Students may verbally assist each other in their own group.

This lesson was inspired by  the creativity of  http://kidslovecraft.blogspot.com .  I call this cute lesson "Circle Creatures",we focused on the shapes particularly the circle. This gave my first graders practice tracing and drawing circles.   Supplies used: 12 x 18 inch construction paper (variety of colors) 4 x 5 inch white paper and black paper 6 x 6 red paper Scissors Glue Pencils We started with one 12 x 18 inch piece of construction paper folded in half.  I gave each table a laminated circle to use as a stencil. We've learned in class that if you fold your paper in 1/2 you will get two of the same objects. So, we traced our circles and cut them out. This always get excited when they see 2 shapes come out.  The "Cat's" out the bag folks!  Yes, second starting making construction paper cats. I don't know where I got this lesson but it has been in my bag of tricks for years. It's my go to for second grade.  Its very easy to make and the kids love that they can stand up all by themselves. Supplies used: Construction paper (Neutral colors) 6x6 and one 9x12 Scissors Glue Pencils/Eraser Extra scraps I took a 12 x 18 sheet of paper and split it into two to make my 6x6 inch square and 9x12 inch rectangle Fold 9x12 inch sheet in half Near the open portion of the folded paper draw a circle and cut it out. Add a tail and extra details Cute!

This is a six grade unit on portraits. We learned to draw proportionate portraits, paint portraits and lastly used construction paper to create portraits. I like using units that focuses on using more than one form of media. This helps those students who may struggle with drawing but are great at building with paper or students who struggle with painting but are great at drawing. They all get to excel in at least one form of media. Below are a few of the finished paper portraits.
